Wisdom Lessons

But the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it. 13 Consider the work of God; For who can make straight what He has made crooked? 14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, But in the day of adversity consider: Surely God has appointed the one as well as the other, So that man can find out nothing that will come after him. 15 I have seen everything in my days of vanity: There is a just man who perishes in his righteousness, And there is a wicked man who prolongs life in his wickedness. 16 Do not be overly righteous, Nor be overly wise: Why should you destroy yourself? 17 Do not be overly wicked, Nor be foolish: Why should you die before your time? 18 It is good that you grasp this, And also not remove your hand from the other; For he who fears God will escape them all. 19 Wisdom strengthens the wise More than ten rulers of the city. 20 For there is not a just man on earth who does good And does not sin.

Ecclesiastes 7:12-20

As we close out this chapter, let us see five lessons. As we examine the question, “Why do we need Godly wisdom?” We will look at three of these principles today and then peruse the others next week.

Why do we need Godly wisdom?

**We need wisdom because we all die. As was stated earlier, the rich and the poor, the foolish and the wise, the believer and the unbeliever all will perish. Are you ready to meet God?

**We need wisdom because we all sin. Solomon teaches us that there is not one person who does not sin. We all come short of God’s glory and need His mercy. Wisdom helps us to see ourselves as we truly are—sinners in need of a Savior.

**We need wisdom because people won’t always like you. People will speak evil of you and even “curse” you behind your back. We also are guilty of doing the same thing to others. Lord, give us wisdom to use our words wisely.

Be Ready

1 A good name is better than precious ointment, And the day of death than the day of one’s birth; 2 Better to go to the house of mourning Than to go to the house of feasting, For that is the end of all men; And the living will take it to heart. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter, For by a sad countenance the heart is made better. 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, But the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. 5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise Than for a man to hear the song of fools. 6 For like the crackling of thorns under a pot, So is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.

Ecclesiastes 7:1-6

The author’s attention now turns to the need for wisdom in a futile world. Having firmly established His case for the vanity of life, Solomon now seeks to apply wisdom to the madness so that he might live as he should. Chapter 7 provides wisdom for the day. Let’s see it in total over these next few weeks.

We are reminded in this passage of the eventuality of death. Every person will face death (if Christ doesn’t return in the rapture of the church).  The rich and the poor will die. The wise and the fool are headed to the same fate. Solomon mentions death, mourning, sorrow, and sadness in the first 4 verses to drive home this point.

Given the shortness of life, it is imperative that we pursue wisdom.  A life lived wisely is far better than a life lived in foolish pursuits. Life is a one-time gift. Use it wisely realizing we will all stand before God in judgment.

Wise

Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.

James 3:l3

The wisdom of the Christian is exhibited by two things. First, the deeds the Believer performs are an opportunity to show Godly wisdom to those outside the faith. An understanding Christian who serves God by serving others is a wonderful example of Christ’s love and grace.

Also, the Christian who exhibits humility is a wise convert.  Wisdom and comprehension are revealed by the Believer through their actions. May we live with wisdom and understanding each and every day.
