Futility

1 Who is like a wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, And the sternness of his face is changed. 2 I say, “Keep the king’s commandment for the sake of your oath to God. 3 Do not be hasty to go from his presence. Do not take your stand for an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him.” 4 Where the word of a king is, there is power; And who may say to him, “What are you doing?” 5 He who keeps his command will experience nothing harmful; And a wise man’s heart discerns both time and judgment, 6 Because for every matter there is a time and judgment, Though the misery of man increases greatly.

Ecclesiastes 8:1-6

Chapter 8 continues the theme began in the previous chapter of Ecclesiastes. The author continues to look for wisdom in the futility of life. Let’s join him in this pursuit this week.

Obey the authorities is the first general instruction found this chapter. General submission to authorities is a good and wise principle. Government is established by God to protect the citizenry in a fallen, sinful world. We would do well to obey. (Romans 13)

There may be a time when civil disobedience is necessary. In Acts 4:18-20, Peter states his willingness to keep speaking the truth despite the warnings from the leaders. These times might be needed, but they will also be infrequent. As much as we can, may we submit to authority even when we disagree with it.

Will of God

Epaphras, who is one of your own, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, sends you his greetings, always striving earnestly for you in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God.

Colossians 4:12

How do we fulfill God’s will in our lives? There are many ways to follow Christ. Allow me to mention four ways today.

**Listen to God through His Word and His Church.

**Obey God and glorify Him in your life.

**Value the truths of God’s Word and the life He has given us.

**Evangelize the lost in word and deed.

Our Refuge

The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him.

Nahum 1:7

The Lord is good. Our Lord is good every day, every hour, and every moment. And God is good no matter the problem or circumstance. The Lord is very good.

God is a place of refuge for His people. The people of the Lord can take refuge in God’s power, His personal presence, and His promises. The Lord is our stronghold in the day of trouble and in the time of triumph. Yahweh is our refuge forever.

The Lord knows His own. Our God knows His children and cares for His children. Dear Christian, the Savior knows every aspect and circumstance of your life. Jesus sees even when others can’t perceive all that is happening to you. The Lord knows His beloved ones. We can take comfort in that fact.

How can we apply these truths to our lives? Believer the Lord, trust the Lord, and obey the Lord. Why? Because God knows us, sees us, and shelters us. Praise be to His glorious name!

Obey

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.

John 14:15

As Jesus’ teaches in Scripture, He calls for a response. His teaching has authority and power. It cannot be ignored. The hearer will either reject Christ’s teaching or follow Christ and be changed. There is no middle ground.

The same is true of us. We have a choice to make when confronted with the truth of God’s Word. We will obey it or we will forsake it. Jesus gives a helpful, practical principle to drive home His point in this verse of the Bible.

What will you do with Jesus’ message? Will you appropriate it and obey it? Or will you reject the Word of the Savior?

Loving All

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Matthew 5:43-48

One thing we learn from this Scripture is this—the standard of love is high in the Kingdom. Christ compels us to go further than worldly norms. This is born out in two ways.

First, we are to love our neighbors and love our enemies. Loving those who love you in return is not enough. We are commanded to love our enemies. We are called to love those who don’t like us, disagree with us, and even persecute us. Once again, Christ is our example as He died for us even when we were still in our sin (Romans 5:8) and enemies with God. (James 4:4)

Also, we are told to pray for our enemies. Do not curse them, but, pray for them. Jesus asks, in v. 46-47, if we only treat those who love us well, what good is it? Instead, we are to go above and beyond in showing love for others by praying for their good and that they would come to know Christ as Savior and Lord.

This teaching is not easy to hear and obey. But kingdom living requires it. The Holy Spirit lives within us (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) and will enable us to do all that Jesus has commanded. Let us all commit ourselves to do what Christ has clearly instructed in this passage of Scripture. Be perfect (complete) as your heavenly Father is perfect!
