Riches

1 Come now, you rich people, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you.2 Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten.3 Your gold and your silver have corroded, and their corrosion will serve as a testimony against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!

James 5:1-3

Do not trust in wealth. That sentiment is clearly stated at the beginning of James 5. And the teaching is strong and forceful.

Do not trust in wealth. Money is uncertain. Finances can be gained and can also be lost. A portfolio can grow and expand, or, it can contract and lose value very quickly. Do not trust in these earthly things because they can let you down.

Do not trust in wealth, dear Christian. Trust in the Lord. God is your supply, your provision and your source.

Do Good

16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

James 4:16-17

Failure to do good when given the opportunity is a sin for the Believer. That is the message of James 4:16-17 and it is our message for today.  Those who cease to do good when they know they should be helpful are committing an act of treason against the Lord.

Sin is not simply trespass, falling short, lawlessness, or transgressing God’s law. It is all those things. But, sin is also eschewing the chances that God gives us to do good things for others. Let us not be guilty of this transgression. May we always be looking to fulfill good for those around us. And may God bless us in this endeavor.

A Vapor

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” 14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. For you are just a vapor that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away.

James 4:13-14

Life on this planet is brief and uncertain. We can make our plans and preparations and there is wisdom in doing so. However, our path can be changed in an instant. Nothing is guaranteed in this life and we must acknowledge that fact.

Life is short and no one is promised tomorrow. James tells us that our lives are like a vapor, a cloud. We appear for a short while and then we are gone. The words of the Apostle are true and faithful.

As a result of this, let us live our lives in a way that honors and pleases God. May we, as the Lord’s people, be faithful to His Word, His will, and His ways. Only one life will soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Today

14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

James 4:14

Life on this planet is brief. Compared to eternity, our existence here is truly just a small blip on the screen. There is no guarantee of tomorrow. In light of all this what are we to do?

Believe in Jesus and be saved. Trust Jesus for our future. And live for Him each day that we have. Tomorrow may never arrive. Let us use this day to honor and glorify our Lord!

Don’t Presume

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.”

James 4:13

James moves into the uncertainty of life as he concludes James 4. The main theme is this—do not count on tomorrow because tomorrow may never arrive. Earthly life is uncertain and can end when we least expect. Don’t presume about the future because we cannot know what the future holds.

As Christians, let us plan for tomorrow. Let us invest in tomorrow and look to the future with hope. But, may we never presume about the future. Let us plan for tomorrow and yet live for today. Today is all we have.

No Hypocrisy

12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?

James 4:12

Christians are never to judge others in a hypocritical way. We all need to realize that we are sinners with blind spots and we may not have all the information. The Lord will judge and we can trust that God’s judgement will be righteous and holy.

Christians need to be discerning in their lives. God’s people are called to test, try, and obey. Yet, we ought to never judge with harshness and hypocrisy. Let us trust in Lord that He will sort everything out in the end.

Slander

11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.

James 4:11

The principle from James 4:11 is simple and to the point—don’t slander fellow believers. We are not to judge the intent of the hearts of others. We should be working to reign in our own hearts and desires.

Obviously, Christians should not slander anyone regardless of whether they are a Christian or not. The precept here is in the context of the teaching of James about how Believers are to interact with one another.

May God help us to love and not slander those in our path.

Commands

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners;    and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

James 4:7-10

Several commands are given in these verses by the Apostle James. They are…………..

*Submit To God

*Resist the Evil One

*Draw Near To God

*Cleanse Your Hearts

*Lament and Mourn Your Sin

*Humble Yourselves Before the Lord

Let us go and do likewise!

Friendship With God

4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.5 Or do you think that the Scripture says to no purpose, “He jealously desires the Spirit whom He has made to dwell in us”?6 But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”

James 4:4-6

Christian, you and I must make a choice. Are we going to be friends with the world system in which we find ourselves? Or are we going to serve the God of grace who gives mercy to the humble? The Apostle tells us we cannot to do both. We have to make a choice.

Let us strive to serve the Lord. The lost and those who are of this world will not understand. May we serve our Savior nonetheless!

Rightful Praying

2 You lust and do not have, so you commit murder. And you are envious and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask with the wrong motives, so that you may spend what you request on your pleasures.

James 4:2-3

Dear Christian, when we pray, let us consider the Apostle’s admonitions……………..

**Pray Reverently

**Pray Consistently

**Pray Fervently

**Pray With Unselfish Motives

God bless you all!
